Wooden Retaining Walls

Wooden retaining walls are less costly compared to other retaining wall building materials, and they are readily available. There are treated wood retaining wall materials that can resist decay and insect infestation; they can last for a good number of years. Aside from the low price, people opt to use wooden retaining walls for the rustic look they create in their yard.

Unlike molded concrete or stone blocks, however, there are special things to consider when it comes to building wooden retaining walls.

For instance, because woods are lightweight and timbers are round, you definitely need to have the base row buried. That is to say you need to dig a trench to lay the base row to prevent it from rolling over while you’re fastening the top rows in. You might also need to prop up your retaining wall with lumber to prevent it from crashing down while you’re working on the rest of the rows.

The integrity of your entire wooden retaining walls depends on the way you fasten it. Fastening stacked timbers is usually done by boring one-half inch diameter holes that traverse through the entire row and inserting it with a rebar. Drive a rebar though the holes and into the ground with a sledgehammer to ensure a perfect fit.

And, choose the right kind of wood for your retaining walls because improperly treated wood can cause you a lot of headache and money later. Pressure treated wood or timber are the right materials to prevent rotting and insect infestation. You can also reinforce the treatment by applying weather sealer or creosote to really ensure that your wooden retaining walls will last you a good number of years.

Don't be afraid to use wood as your retaining wall building materials. With proper building and treatment, wood can very well compete with the more concrete building materials. Plus, the rustic look that only wooden retaining walls can give is priceless.
